Ladies and gentlemen, please say hello to SpacePapa (스페이스파파)!
One thing this local band has going for them is their damn catchy tunes. A bit of infectious pop with an indie rock backbone makes their songs easily accessible and have fueled the band with serious momentum.
In honor of all their recent accomplishments, I delved deeper into SpacePapa’s world for Moksori with a little Q and A.

Si il y a une chose que ces coréens ont en leur faveur, ce sont leurs mélodies sacrément accrocheuses. Leur mélange de pop contagieuse et de bases de rock indépendant, rendent leurs musiques facilement accessibles et ont contribué à leur dynamisme grandissant.
En hommage à leurs récentes réalisations, Moksori s’est immergé dans le monde des SpacePapa à l’aide de cette petite interview.

1 | Bonjour SpacePapa ! Pouvez-vous nous présenter votre groupe ?
“ Bonjour tout le monde, nous sommes les SpacePapa et nous sommes un groupe de Synthé-rock. ”
2 | Pourquoi avoir choisi d’être musiciens ?
“ Parce que nous aimons ça ! ”
3 | Comment le groupe s’est-il formé ? Et pourquoi avez-vous choisi ce nom ?
“ Notre guitariste, Seong Min, a réuni tous les membres du groupe -Jin Kyu (chant), Eun Ho (batterie) et Su Bin (Synthé)-. Et la raison pour laquelle nous avons choisi ce nom est que ‘Space’ (Espace, ndlr) est une image qui représente bien notre musique et ‘Papa’ est facile à prononcer. ”
4 | Comment avez-vous procédé pour créer vos premières chansons ?
“ A vrai dire, nous avions commencé par composer des musiques instrumentales puis nous avons songé que si nous ajoutions du chant, nos musiques pourraient être plus puissantes et intéressantes. Nous l’avons donc fait et avons pu constater que c’était le cas. ”
5 | Subin, tu as rejoint le groupe il y a quelques mois, après le départ de Suk Young et de Kyung Hoon… Est-ce que cela a eu un impact dans le style de musique du groupe ?
“ Avant que nous ayons décidé de changer de membres, le groupe avait beaucoup d’instruments puisqu’il y avait un synthé et un bassiste. Cependant, puisque je joue les deux à la fois avec mon synthé, notre son est plus simple et très addictif. ”
6 | « Get smart, fund art » (Soyez malin, investissez dans l’art -ndlr) Vous avez déjà participé au projet ‘Tumb bug’. Comment s’est déroulé cette expérience ? Pourquoi avez-vous choisi cette plateforme ?
“ Si un musicien veut produire un album, il aura besoin de trouver des fonds… Et nos fans voulaient notre musique. C’est pourquoi nous avons décidé d’utiliser le projet ‘tumblbug’ ; pour échanger les uns avec les autres. ”

Cinema Club), « Just a little bit » (kids of 88), « The stuff » (Lasse
Lindh), « Sleep alone » (Two Door Cinema Club), « Treasure » (Bruno
Mars) …. Vous avez pour habitude de faire des reprises lors de vos concerts. Comment les choisissez-vous ?
“ Nous les avons choisies, car elles possèdent des sons pop qui nous correspondent. Mais nous aimons beaucoup de genres différents et nous aimons aussi changer de style. ”
8 | Comment procédez-vous lors de la composition de vos titres ?
“ L’un de nous propose des idées puis nous les perfectionnons ensemble. ”
9 | Quels sont les challenges auxquels vous devez faire face lors de vos concerts ou lorsque vous créez vos titres ?
“ La cohésion entre les membres. ”
10 | Comment voyez-vous la scène musicale Séoulite ?
“ La scène indie coréenne est petite et a besoin de plus d’attention du public. ”
11 | Quels sont vos futurs projets ?
“ Nous allons faire un mini-album aussi vite que possible. ”
12 | Merci pour vos réponses, avez-vous une dernière chose à rajouter pour les lecteurs de Moksori ?
“ Merci d’avoir lu notre interview et nous espérons que les lecteurs de Moksori aimeront d’autant plus la musique coréenne ainsi que SpacePapa ! ”
1 | Hello SpacePapa! Could you please introduce yourselves to our readers?
“ Hi everyone, our team name is SpacePapa and we are a Synth Rock Band. ”
2 | Why did you choose to be musicians?
“ ‘Cause we love it! ”
3 | How did the band form? And why did you choose the name Spacepapa?
“ Our guitarist, Seong Min, got all the band members together -Jin Kyu (Vocal), Eun Ho (Drums), Su Bin (Synth)-. And then, the reason why we named our band ‘SpacePapa’ is because the ‘Space’ image is relevant to our music and ‘Papa’ is very easy to pronounce. ”
4 | How were the first songs born?
“ Actually we made instrumental songs in the first place, but we thought that if we added vocals, our music could be more powerful and awesome.. So we did it and it was indeed better than instrumental. ”
5 | Subin, you joined the band few months ago after Suk Young and Kyung Hoon leaved the band..
Did this lead to a change of style in the music that the band played?
“ Before we changed the members, our band sound had lots of components because of bass and synth sounds. But now as I play the synth bass, our sound became simple and very addictive. ”
6 | « Get smart, fund art » You’ve already participated to the project ‘tumblbug’. Why did you chose to use that platform?
How was this experience?
“ If a musician wants to make an album, he’ll need to raise the money.. And our fans wanted our music, so we used the project ‘tumblbug’ to share the things each other. ”

You’re used to cover songs for showcases. How do you chose them?
“ Because those songs have many things pop, they’re good for us. But we like many genres and we like to change our style. ”
8 | How do you arrange songs when the band is writing them?
“ One band member sketches the song and then assembles together with the other members. ”
9 | What challenges the band has had when making music or performing live?
“ Unity among members. ”
10 | How do you feel about the Seoul music scene?
“ The Indie band scene is small and needs more attention of the public. ”
11 | What are you planning on doing next?
“ We will make an EP album as soon as possible. ”
12 | Thanks for the answers, do you have anything else that you’d like to say to Moksori’s readers?
“ Thanks for reading our interview and we hope that Moksori’s readers will love more Korean music and Spacepapa! ”
